We live in a world that at times feels so complicated with the many options it gives on the simplest of things. For example, when you walk into a coffee shop you are bombarded with so many permutations of coffee and teas that the simple task of ordering a coffee can be a laborious task. I have also found myself browsing through extensive list of movies on streaming services and not being able to make up my mind on what to watch and going to bed disappointed without watching anything because I’d exhausted all my energy trying to find the right movie.
Then I remember the days when I use to watch TV on local channels and I eagerly wait for the weekend to watch the feature film and it didn’t matter if it was an action, drama, mystery or horror, I would enjoy it just as much. The eight channels that my TV received were more than enough to make me stay up late every night and make my mother come in my room and turn off the TV because it was a weekday and I had school the next day. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to go on a nostalgic rant of how life use to be better in the “old days”, life is just as good as it was then and the abilities that we have with technology of virtually having access to the world with our fingertips is astounding.
We no longer have to spend hours at a library looking for a book that teaches the how to’s of our latest hobby, all we have to do now is type in a couple words in the Google search engine and just like magic we get thousands of pages relating to the topic with thousands of opinions on the matter. It is scientifically proven however, that when the brain is given to many options it will become overwhelmed and stressed making the simple task of choosing tiring and difficult. At least in my experience I feel that have I spent too much time choosing and not enough time doing and enjoying. Opinions are just opinions, there are no right or wrong ways of doing things, just different perspectives and different tastes.
So beginning today I’m challenging myself and whoever else wants to join me to stop spending so much time choosing and overthinking things, lets simplify life a little and spend more time doing, even if means trying a different flavor of coffee or picking a movie that may not have the most ratings on Netflix. The worst thing that can happen is that you won’t like it, but you’ll never know until you try it. Who knows, it might become your new all time favorite movie. Let’s make life simple again and begin appreciating the different colors, flavors and sounds that it gives us by taking it one color at a time, one flavor at a time and one sound at a time.
