"I can't breath!"
Those were the last words that Eric Garner, a 43 year old father of six, said on July 7, 2014 after he was put in a chokehold by New York City police officr, Daniel Pantaleo. Garner was accused of illegally selling cigarettes, Today, that same officer was not indicted even though Garner's death was ruled a homicide. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide by neck compression which is essentially a choke hold.
The NYPD banned officers from using choke holds in 1993. The grand jury made up of 23 community members (14 white and 9 non-white) met for 8 weeks and decided there was not enough evidence to indict officer Pantaleo with a crime.
The trust between the people and the justice system, and all those who represent them, is broken when cases like these see the outcome that we saw today. The time for change is now!
You be the judge.
